Why students should develop their own excursion

Students developing their own excursions is a wonderful way to make knowledge transfer really profitable. Peek’s software helps you to reach this higher cognitive level.

Cognitive principles

We all know that students remember information best when it is presented multiple times, in different ways. There are a number of basic cognitive principles that are important here. Bloom’s taxonomy lists the next levels:

  1. Remember
  2. Understand
  3. Apply
  4. Analyze
  5. Evaluate
  6. Create

We don’t want to bore you with an in-depth educational article. However, let’s take a closer look at the highest level: create. In this level, students use their knowledge and experience to create something new. As a result, the students fully absorb the new knowledge. But how to you apply this in your fieldwork or practical courses?

Students creating their own excursion

Students developing an excursion themselves is a great way for this. To make an excursion, they have to work with the content of the course themselves. A number of thinking steps are taken:

  • What professional knowledge have I acquired?
  • In what area do I see this knowledge reflected?
  • And next: how do I explain this to others and ensure that I can transfer that knowledge in a fun and good way?

The Peek Plus package gives students the opportunity to develop their own excursions in Peek. They log in to the My Peek environment and start working independently. Short video tutorials and of course FAQs help them with this.

They now choose their own area, select locations and post their own content here. With text, audio and video. They enrich this content with interesting questions and assignments.

And isn’t it great when their peers, or maybe even friends or family, are taken on the road by the student via the app?

Case: Design in Land and Water Management

So a good example of this is the course Design in Land and Water Management of the study International Land and Water Management at Wageningen University & Research.

Within the course, the students’ own excursions are collected annually in their own magazine. In this magazine, every student is given the opportunity to present their excursion on one page. View some examples here:

The students even make their own podcasts for the excursion:
