Passionate about field work: a look back on the Peek Day 2024

On June 18th, Peek users from various institutions gathered for Peek Day 2024. They shared their experiences with excursions and fieldwork, and the Peek Team presented the Road Map for the software’s development.

We were hosted by Wageningen University and Research, and among the attendees were representatives from Utrecht University (CHARM representation), Van Hall Larenstein University of Applied Sciences, and Linde College from Wolvega in secondary education. It was incredibly valuable for the Peek Team to have different disciplines (from researchers to teachers to educational support staff) at the table.

Sessions

Roxane Bradaczek, Junior-Researcher Land Use and Food Security at Wageningen Environmental Research, hosted a session about Peek as an innovative data collection tool for research purposes. In the session she paid attention to the concept of how Peek can be used effectively and safely as a data collection tool, and how those research results can be converted into useful data.

Huub Zonjee, E-learning Advisor at Wageningen University & Research, conducted a session on the over 90 excursions organized at WUR using Peek in the past year. We observed a wide variety of activities with many creative implementations by the teachers: a wonderful addition to the teacher’s toolkit.

Peek Excursion of the Year Award

This year, four excursions were nominated for the Excursion of the Year award. Aeres University of Applied Sciences, Wageningen University and Research, University of Groningen, and CHARM/Utrecht University competed for the title with each presenting an innovative excursion that received high scores from students. After four brief pitches, Ádám Tóth from Utrecht University/CHARM won the award. His excursion in Balaruc for the Global Challenges for Sustainability MSc program was a success for students, not only because the learning objectives were achieved but also because it brought together and connected students from various countries and regions.

Peek Road Map

The Peek Team presented which ideas from users at the previous User Day have since been implemented. Additionally, the plans for the coming period (the ‘Road Map’) were presented, including a significant expansion of the ‘results dashboard’ in My Peek and the option to implement Custom Map Layers per excursion. Users were given the opportunity to provide feedback. To conclude, new ideas and suggestions could be shared in a creative Brown Paper Session, accompanied by drinks.

As Team Peek, we look back on an enjoyable event with part of our community and are grateful for our enthusiastic users. We are considering an online version for all our international users. Until next time!
